The Pandemic Was A Final Exam For Financial Advisors’ Emotional Intelligence. Did Yours Pass?

I recently had the opportunity to revisit our family’s estate plans to make some necessary updates. Among other considerations, my wife and I also have a special-needs child, and we wanted to make sure our plans reflected that.

I went into the process expecting to dig into the details of various state-level estate planning laws, potential upcoming tax changes and lots of paperwork. What I didn’t expect was how much this experience would teach me about the growing importance of emotional intelligence, or EQ, in the advisor/client relationship — and how the pandemic has highlighted the value of advisors who use their EQ to initiate key conversations with clients effectively.
